It’s the June school holidays and that means more time for riding during the week! We decided to go and explore Central Park Trails in the Modderfontein Nature Reserve yesterday morning. It was our first time riding there and we had lots of fun!
There are 4 trails to choose from:
The Orange trail is the easiest trail and suitable for beginners.
The Green trail is a bit longer but also suitable for beginners. There are a few long climbs to test your fitness level but nothing too technical.
The Yellow Trail has more technical sections and is for the intermediate rider.
The Red trail is for advanced riders.
We decided to do the Green Trail due to a time limitation. The trail is a pleasure to ride as it is not too difficult. It includes ample single-track and a few sections of jeep track. The trail starts at the parking area and heads up a moderate hill after crossing the first bridge. Just the right thing to get your heart rate up! It then traverses through high veld grass along single-track and passes one of the dams on the property. You can stop at the first dam where you can use the bird hide to study the local birds!
There are several other bridge crossings and a forest section on the route. The uphills are not too taxing except for a relatively long uphill after the halfway mark. The final descent is quite bumpy but lots of fun! The trails are well marked and maintained.
Modderfontein Nature Reserve has a restaurant where you can restore your glycogen levels or just enjoy a cup of coffee or cold drink. You can bring your own picnic basket and bask in the sun or settle down for a braai after your ride. The ablution facilities are perfect and well maintained. Over weekends there is also a bike wash facility available.
Why not head over to check it out for yourself! It is definitely worth the visit!
